The board started in March 2004 when the Pennysaver quit printing the free
classifieds page and a few of us figured the internet could do the same job for
nothing. First it ran on a Pentium II under Denny's workbench; these days it's on a
rented server, but it's the same code, more or less, and the same deal: free
classifieds and town talk for Rivertown and the river valley — Galeton, Marsh
Creek, Dunmore Falls, Petersfield, and the townships.
Nobody gets paid. There are no banner ads and there never will be (we tried it for
two months in 2007, everybody hated it, including us). Hosting is covered by the
change jar at Beckman's Hardware and the occasional check from a grateful seller,
which we spend on hosting and stamps.
Some numbers, for the curious: the board has carried over 31,000 postings
since 2004, survived two server failures (2011, 2019 — pour one out for the hit
counter table), one flood scare, and every redesign fad of the last twenty years.
It still looks like this on purpose. It loads fast on the library computers and
Marge's old laptop, and that's the whole design brief.
Who runs it: Denny (webmaster since day one), plus a rotating handful of
volunteers who review the posting pile. Complaints to
webmaster@rivertownboard.com;
compliments also accepted.
